That sums up the James Beard Awards and while Monday night's big awards ceremony was dedicated to recognizing star chefs from around the country, a group of us were at Friday night's much more intimate sit-down dinner for the James Beard Media Awards where we were finalists for three prizes.

What to eat to beat the blues

Since I'm always interested in learning how food can help to prevent and manage different health conditions, a recent study about the link between coffee and depression caught my attention. The study, which appeared in the Archives of Internal Medicine and got a lot of buzz, suggested that women who drink coffee have lower rates of depression.

And if my mom and sister happen to be there (such as when we’re cooking holiday meals), then we’re talking three-part harmony. Plan a vegetarian Cinco de Mayo feast

Tomorrow is Cinco de Mayo and I don't have plans to go out. But I am going to cook up a Mexican feast. To me, it's just another great excuse to cook Mexican, and maybe drink a michelada (my favorite chile, lime, beer concoction.) I'm going to make Butternut Squash & Bean Tacos with Green Salsa (see the photo below). This recipe was created by cookbook author Vanessa Barrington for a story we did for EatingWell magazine on heirloom beans. (I may just use canned beans, unless I get my act together and put on a pot of pintos to simmer when I get home tonight.)
